THE BATTLE IN THE MIND

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to
the pulling down of strong holds;
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ. (II Corinthians 10:3-5)

THE PROPHETIC WORD OF GOD

The word "prophecy" means to speak forth. Bible prophecy includes three basic kinds of
speaking forth:

1. A message of inspiration from God.
2. Prediction of future events in God's eternal plan.
3. An interpretation for man of the acts of God.

God commissioned each prophet of the Bible to fulfill a particular role in His plan.

As interpreters they explained God's acts to men.
As spokesmen they voiced God's truth. They spoke messages of hope and
inspiration.
As prophets they predicted future events in God's plan through revelation given by
the Holy Spirit. The predictions of Bible prophecy are beyond the power of
human ability. They include a sufficient number of details to eliminate
speculation or guessing.

There are two basic ways in which God spoke through the prophets.

WALK IN THE SPIRIT:

Your daily walk (how you live) can be controlled by Satan working through your flesh, the
world, or demon powers if you permit it. You do not have to be controlled by the world, the
flesh, or the Devil. You can learn to walk in the Spirit:

THE KINGDOM BELONGS TO THOSE WHO ARE POOR IN SPIRIT:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
(Matthew 5:3)

The world honors those with material wealth. God chooses the poor of the world and makes
them rich in faith:

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world
rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which He hath promised to them that
love Him? (James 2:5)
And He lifted up his eyes on His disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for
yours is the Kingdom of God. (Luke 6:20)

THE POOR ARE RICH AND THE RICH ARE POOR:
The world emphasizes the spirit of self reliance, self- expression, and self-improvement. But
God approves those who are poor in spirit who realize they have no ability to save themselves, to
satisfy their spiritual needs, or to solve their own problems.

Pray

Paul emphasizes that the battle is not a natural one and natural weapons are ineffective.
Spiritual battles must be fought with spiritual weapons

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand,

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the
breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the
preparation of the gospel of peace,

Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all
the fiery darts of the wicked one
.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit being watchful
to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the
saints...(Ephesians 6:13-18)

Multiplication Methodologies

The Bible records the creation of the world and the first man and woman (Genesis 1).
The first command given by God to these newly created people was to multiply:

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him;
male and female created He them.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,
and replenish the earth, and subdue it...(Genesis 1:27-28)

This process was not only to be physical multiplication, it was also to be spiritual. As
Adam and Eve multiplied physically they would fill the earth with others like themselves;
people who knew God and walked in fellowship with Him. They would be reproducing
spiritually as well as physically.
The fall of man into sin interfered with this process (Genesis 3). Sin resulted in physical
death which hindered physical multiplication (Genesis 2:17). It also caused spiritual
death which is the spiritual separation of sinful man from a righteous God. This hindered
spiritual multiplication.
Because God loved man so much, He made a special plan to save people from this terrible
spiritual death. God sent Jesus Christ to die for the sins of all mankind. Jesus paid the
penalty of death in our place, then He overcame death by rising again from the dead (John
20).
Each individual must choose to accept God's plan of salvation by asking forgiveness for
sin and accepting Jesus as Savior.* As a believer in Jesus with sins forgiven, you are
saved from spiritual death.
Although the physical body will someday die, you will continue to live spiritually and
will receive a new body which will live forever:

THE DEFINITION OF EVANGELISM

The word for "evangelism" (or "evangelization") comes from a Greek word "evangelion."
There are actually four forms of this basic word. One word means "good news," two
words mean "to proclaim the good news," and one refers to the "evangelist" or person
doing the proclaiming.

Evangelism is not just a series of meetings or church services. Evangelism is not the
same as revival. Revival is the Lord at work in the Church. In revival, the emphasis is on
the presence of the Lord restoring life to His people.

Evangelism is the church at work for the Lord. In evangelism the emphasis is on the new
birth experience, the beginning of spiritual life. The renewal resulting from revival,
however, sets in motion the forces of evangelism which result in "new creatures in Christ"
so the two are tightly linked together in terms of spiritual life.

How To Intercede

This is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us whatever
we ask-we know that we have what we asked of Him.
(I John 5:14-15)

The key element in intercessory prayer is not how loud we pray, nor how energetic we are in our
prayers (this is not say that these are wrong), but how sincere our requests are as we make them
known unto God. It is imperative that God's glory be the end of our intercession because Satan's
chief goal is to prevent God from being glorified. Therefore, if we are to have as our primary
goal the glorification of God and commit our whole soul and being to the movement of
intercessory prayer, God will manifest Himself. "Then you will call upon me and when you seek
me with all your heart, I will be found by you..." (Jeremiah 29:12-13).

Environmental Analysis

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that
every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
(Genesis 6:5)

Each born-again believer is called of God to become part of the great spiritual body
known as the Church. The main commission given the Church is to take the Gospel to all
nations:

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and,
lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
(Matthew 28:19-20)

...Thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day...
...That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name
among all nations... (Luke 24:46-47)

Efforts to fulfill this challenge are affected by something known as "environment.” This
lesson introduces the subject of environment, defines the term, and explains how the
environment relates to the mission of the Church.

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred,
and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a
great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a
blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in
thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:1-3)

AN APPOINTED KINGDOM

Before Jesus returned to Heaven He told His disciples:
And I appoint unto you a Kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me.
(Luke 22:29)
Jesus also spoke of His Church which would extend the message of the Kingdom throughout the
world:

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build
my church; and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: and whatsoever
thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatsoever thou
shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven. (Matthew 16:18-19)

AN INTRODUCTION TO PRAYER

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be
opened unto you:

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth, and to him
that knocketh it shall be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8)

THE DEFINITION OF PRAYER
Prayer is communicating with God. It takes different forms, but basically it occurs when man
talks with God and God talks with man. Prayer is described as:
Calling upon the name of the Lord: Genesis 12:8
Crying unto God: Psalms 27:7; 34:6
Drawing near to God: Psalms 73:28; Hebrews 10:22
Looking up: Psalms 5:3
Lifting up the soul: Psalms 25:1
Lifting up the heart: Lamentations 3:41
Pouring out the heart: Psalms 62:8
Pouring out the soul: I Samuel 1:15Crying to Heaven: II Chronicles 32:20
Beseeching the Lord: Exodus 32:11
Seeking God: Job 8:5
Seeking the face of the Lord: Psalms 27:8
Making supplication: Job 8:5; Jeremiah 36:7

LEAVEN-LIKE EVANGELISM

And again He said, Whereunto shall I liken the Kingdom of God?
It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till
the whole was leavened. (Luke 13:20-21)

This lesson discusses the need for evangelism, explains the process of evangelism, and
defines terms that are important for you to understand as you begin your study of this
subject. In Old Testament times when the temple was built, the sound of a hammer, axe,
or any tool of iron was not heard while it was being constructed (I Kings 6:7).

The silence with which those great natural stones were put into place is a natural example
of a great spiritual truth. A "greater than Solomon" is now building a greater spiritual
temple. This spiritual temple is made up of "living stones" being laid by the Lord Jesus
Christ. This temple also is being erected silently, with each stone perfectly fitted
together. It is occurring through the silent but powerful process of "leaven-like
evangelism."

SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

Because spiritual warfare is just that--spiritual--it must be understood with a spiritual
mind. In our natural, sinful state we cannot understand spiritual things:

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they
are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned. (I Corinthians 2:14)

It is necessary to use spiritual discernment to understand spiritual things.

Perhaps one of the best examples of natural and spiritual discernment is recorded in II
Kings chapter 6. It is the story of a natural battle in which troops of the enemy nation of
Syria had surrounded a small town called Dothan where the prophet Elisha was staying
.
When Elisha's servant, Gehazi, saw the great host of the enemy he became fearful. Elisha
prayed that God would open Gehazi's spiritual eyes so he could see the angelic hosts
surrounding and protecting them. On this occasion, God actually opened the natural eyes
of Gehazi and allowed him to visibly see the superior forces of God aligned for battle.

The story of this battle at Dothan is similar to present spiritual conditions in the Church.
There are some, like Elisha, who see clearly into the realm of the spirit.

THE NATURAL AND SPIRITUAL REALMS

To understand this invisible war, you must first understand the natural and spiritual
worlds. Man exists in two worlds: The natural world and the spiritual world. The natural
world is that which can be seen, felt, touched, heard, or tasted. It is tangible and visible.

The country, nation, city or village in which you live is part of the natural world. You
are a resident in a natural kingdom located on one of the visible continents of the world.
You can see the people who are part of your environment. You can communicate with
them. You can experience the sights, sounds, and smells around you.

But there is another world in which you live. That world is a spiritual world. You cannot
see it with your physical eyes, but it is just as real as the natural world in which you live.
In I Corinthians 15:40, Paul speaks of this division of natural and spiritual. He says there
is a natural (terrestrial) body and there is a spiritual (celestial) body.

All men have a natural body which lives in the natural world, but man is also a spiritual
being with an eternal soul and spirit. Man is body, soul, and spirit. Your spiritual being
(soul and spirit) is part of a spiritual world just as your natural body is part of the natural
world.

THE BATTLE FOR THE BODY

The early Church viewed their spiritual experience in terms of warfare. Military
terminology is used throughout the New Testament. Protection was seen in the armor of
God. The Word of God was compared to a sword. Satan's attacks were called fiery darts.
Faith was the "good fight" and believers were told to "war a good warfare.” The early
Church knew they were engaged in intense spiritual struggle.

The Bible states that God's people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge (Hosea
4:6). One of the areas in which believers are defeated due to lack of knowledge is in this
invisible warfare. There is a great war being waged in the world today. It is not a conflict
between nations, tribes, or government leaders. It is not a rebellion or coup. It is an
important invisible battle in the spirit world
.
The Christian life is war. The sooner we recognize and prepare for it, the sooner we will
experience victory. One aspect of this invisible war targets the soul and spirit of man.
Harvestime International Institute has a course entitled "Spiritual Strategies: A Manual Of
Spiritual Warfare" which focuses on this portion of the invisible war.

But there is another part of this warfare that is manifested in the physical realm. In this
course we call it the "Battle For The Body." Satan has targeted the physical bodies of
believers because he knows that weak and sickly warriors cannot wage effective battle
against his kingdom.

Luke 14:31 says, "What king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down
first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against
him with twenty thousand?" No one should ever enter battle without a careful
examination of his resources and development of battle strategies.

In this course we are making a careful evaluation of the strategies available to win the war
against Satan in the battle for your body. You will learn to do battle for your physical
body and to minister these truths to other wounded warriors in God's army.

Foundations Of Faith

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto
perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works,
and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of
the dead, and of eternal judgment.
And this will we do, if God permit. (Hebrews 6:1-3)

THE BOOKS OF LAW

The books of law were written by Moses and they span a period of 600 years. The books of
law consist of five books:
Genesis: Records the beginning of the universe, man, the Sabbath, marriage, sin, sacrifice,
nations, and government. Also records the stories of key men of God: Abraham, Isaac,
Jacob, and Joseph.
Exodus: Details how Israel became a nation with Moses as leader. Israel is delivered from
bondage in Egypt and journeys to Mt. Sinai where the law of God is given.
Leviticus: This book was a manual of worship for Israel. It provides instruction to the
religious leaders and explains how a sinful people can approach a righteous God. It points
also to the coming of Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Numbers: Records Israel's 40 years of wandering in the wilderness as a result of
disobedience to God. The title of the book is from two "numberings" or population census
taken during the long journey.
Deuteronomy: Records the close of Moses' life and reviews the laws given in Exodus and
Leviticus.

THE OLD TESTAMENT INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOKS OF LAW

In previous chapters you learned that the Bible is the written Word of God. You learned it
is divided into two major sections called the Old Testament and the New Testament. You
learned the four divisions of the Old Testament books: Law, History, Poetry, Prophecy. You
also learned the four divisions of the New Testament books: Gospels, History, Letters, and
Prophecy.
With this lesson you begin a basic survey of the books which make up the major divisions
you have learned about. There are 39 books in the Old Testament. We will start our survey
with the books of law:

FOR BEGINNERS

If you have never read the Bible before, start with the book of John in the New Testament.
This book was written by one of the Disciples of Jesus Christ named John. He tells the story
of Jesus in a simple way which is easy to understand.

Read one chapter in John each day in the order in which they are found in your Bible. Use
the following chart to check off each chapter as you read it.

The Gospel Of John:
_____1 _____5 _____9 _____13 _____17
_____2 _____6 _____10 _____14 _____18
_____3 _____7 _____11 _____15 _____19
_____4 _____8 _____12 _____16 _____20

READ SYSTEMATICALLY:

Some people do not understand God's Word because they do not have a systematic plan for
reading. They read a chapter here and there and fail to understand how it all fits together.
This is like reading a few pages here and there in a text book on medicine and then trying to
set up a medical practice.

The Bible tells us to "search the scriptures" (John 5:39). This means to study them carefully.
The Bible is like a text book used in school. You must read it in an orderly way if you are
to understand its content. Select one of the following reading schedules and begin reading
your Bible daily.

READ PRAYERFULLY:

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord. (Ezra 7:10)

Before you start to read, pray to God and ask Him to help you understand the message He
has given you through His written Word. Let your prayer be as the Psalmist David prayed:

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
(Psalms 119:18)

READ SELECTIVELY:

Start by reading the "milk" of the word. These are the simple truths of the Word of God:

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word that ye may grow
thereby. (I Peter 2:2)

Later you will mature spiritually to where you can eat "meat" of the Word of God. This
means you will be able to understand more difficult teachings of the Bible:

For everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he
is a babe.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason
of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
(Hebrews 5:13-14)
I have fed you with milk, and not with meat; for hitherto ye were not able to
bear it . . . (I Corinthians 3:2)

SUCCESSFUL BIBLE READING

You will learn much in this course about how to understand and interpret the Bible. You will
also learn methods of creative Bible study. But the first step in understanding the Bible is to
begin to read it. To help you start reading God's Word we have outlined several different
reading plans. These include a plan for those just starting their study as well as a plan for
those who are more advanced in the study of God's Word.
First, here are four suggestions for successful Bible reading:

READ DAILY:
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day
and night. (Psalms 1:2)

God made your physical body so you must have food daily in order to remain healthy. In
a similar manner, your spirit must be fed daily with the food of the Word of God if you are
to be spiritually healthy:
. . . It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of
God. (Luke 4:4)

OLD TESTAMENT DIVISIONS

The books of the Old Testament are divided into four major groups: Law, history, poetry and
8
prophecy.

THE BOOKS OF THE LAW:
There are five books of law. The names of these books are:
Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy
These books record the creation of man and the world by God and the early history of man.
They tell how God raised up the nation of Israel as a people through which He could reveal
Himself to the nations of the world.
These books record the laws of God. The best known parts are the Ten Commandments
(Exodus 20:3-17), the greatest of all commandments (Deuteronomy 6:5), and the second
greatest commandment (Leviticus 19:18).
Open your Bible and locate the books of Law in the Old Testament. Locate the three verses
mentioned in the preceding paragraph and read them. These are an example of the laws of
God recorded in these books.

"Basic Bible Survey"

"Basic Bible Survey" is a companion course of "Creative Bible Study Methods" which teaches
various ways to study the Bible. Both courses are designed to enrich your personal study of
God's Word.*

MAJOR DIVISIONS

The Bible is divided into two major sections called the Old Testament and the New
Testament. The word "testament" means covenant. A covenant is an agreement. The Old
Testament records God's original covenant or agreement with man. The New Testament
records the new covenant made by God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

What was the subject of these two agreements? They both concerned restoring sinful man
to right relationship with God. God made a law that sin can only be forgiven through the
shedding of blood:

THE PURPOSE OF THE BIBLE

The Bible itself records its main purpose:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
(II Timothy 3:16-17)

The Scriptures are to be used to teach doctrine, to reprove and correct from evil, and to teach
righteousness. They will help you live right and equip you to work for God.

Some of the writers wrote down exactly what God said:

Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken
unto thee against Israel . . . (Jeremiah 36:2)

Other writers wrote what they experienced or what God revealed concerning the future:

Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things
which shall be hereafter. (Revelation 1:19)

All of the writers wrote under God's inspiration the words of His message for us.

POSITIVE FEAR

The Bible has two connotations for the word “fear.” One is positive, reflecting a healthy
respect for God, and it is foundational to spiritual wisdom:
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those
who do His commandments. His praise endures forever. (Psalms 111:10)
This positive fear of God results in blessings:
Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His
commandments. (Psalms 112:1)
Those who fear God are protected from evil:
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.
(Psalm 34:7)
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; he also will hear their cry and save them.
(Psalm 145:19)
In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of
refuge. (Proverbs 14:26)
Those who fear God know no want:

REPLACE FEAR WITH FAITH

Fear Paralyzes
And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast
throughout all Judah. (2 Chronicles 20:3)
Jehoshaphat received a bad report concerning a multitude of enemy forces and his first
response was fear. This is understandable for, as we learned in the last chapter, the coalition of
enemy forces aligned against him were quite formidable.
Centuries later our immediate response to difficult circumstances has not changed. When
we receive a bad report or face a multitude of problems--when we don’t know what to do--we
usually respond with fear. Impossible situations are never resolved by fear, however, so the first
thing we must do when we don’t know what to do is replace fear with faith.

A King who Walked God's Way

Jehoshaphat was the son of King Asa and a woman named Azubah. He was a young man
of 35 when he became king over Judah:
Jehoshaphat the son of Asa had become king over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king
of Israel. Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned
twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
And he walked in all the ways of his father Asa. He did not turn aside from them, doing
what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Nevertheless the high places were not taken away,
for the people offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.
Also Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. (1 Kings 22:41-44)
Details of Jehoshaphat’s administration of the kingdom of Judah are recorded in 2
Chronicles chapters 17-19. Jehoshaphat immediately strengthened Judah’s military forces, sent
priests and Levites throughout the kingdom to teach God’s law, and established a righteous
judgment system. The Chronicles declare concerning him:
Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father
David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His
commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. Therefore the Lord established
the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches
and honor in abundance. And his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord;
